British television icon Dame Penelope Keith has died at the age of 86 after living with cancer, her family announced.
Dame Penelope was best known for portraying the snobbish suburbanite Margo Leadbetter in the classic British sitcom The Good Life, which premiered in 1975, and the widowed aristocrat Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born, first broadcast in 1979.

She began her acting career on stage and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963 before becoming a household name through her television work.
In 1977, she won a BAFTA for her performance as Margo Leadbetter, a domineering social climber whose character gradually revealed a compassionate side.
The Good Life followed Tom and Barbara Good, played by Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal, as they abandoned city life to become self-sufficient at their suburban home in Surbiton. Their unconventional lifestyle, complete with vegetable gardens and farm animals, frequently clashed with the sensibilities of their neighbours, Margo and her husband Jerry.
She later starred in the BBC sitcom To the Manor Born as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, an aristocrat forced to sell her family estate after her husband's death. Although she moved into the estate's lodge house, she remained determined to preserve her way of life while keeping a close eye on the estate's new owner, self-made millionaire Richard DeVere, played by Peter Bowles.
Dame Penelope was appointed a Dame Commander in 2014 in recognition of her services to the arts and charity.
Paying tribute on X, former UK culture secretary Sir Jeremy Hunt wrote: "Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Dame Penelope Keith CBE. She was a neighbour and friend where she was dearly loved by all who knew her in Milford. She helped Britain laugh at itself, one of our best national qualities, and brought happiness to millions. RIP dear Penny."
