New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced that bypolls to three Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal will be held on July 24. The seats fell vacant following the resignation of three rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) members.
The three former TMC Rajya Sabha MPs who resigned are Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Prakash Chik Baraik. They stepped down on different dates in June after questioning the party leadership following its defeat in the Assembly elections.
According to the Election Commission's schedule, the counting of votes will take place on the evening of July 24.
With the BJP sweeping the West Bengal Assembly elections, the party's strength in the Rajya Sabha is expected to increase after the bypolls.
