France and Britain are ready to lead a mission in the Strait of Hormuz with the support of the Netherlands and Italy to help re-opening the sea lane after the deal agreed upon by the United States and Iran becomes a reality, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday.
The mission could be deployed within two or three days following the confirmation of the deal, Macron added, also saying applying tolls would be against international law.
Oil prices fell on the news, though shippers remained cautious, and ensuring the waterway is clear of mines could take weeks. Brent crude futures fell some 5% on Monday while stock markets jumped.
Macron also said his country will not yield to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to apply 100% tariffs on French wine unless Paris eliminates its digital tax on American tech giants.
"This digital tax, decided by Europeans, implemented by several countries, is part of our law," Macron said in an interview on French TV channel TF1. "It's not the United States that decides on the Europeans' law."
