Chisinau: Hundreds of people took part in an LGBTQ+ Pride march in Moldova's capital, Chisinau, on Saturday, calling for equality, visibility and stronger legal protections for sexual and gender minorities.
The demonstration formed part of the annual Pride events organised by local rights group GenderDoc-M, one of the country's leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organisations.
Participants carrying rainbow flags and banners marched through the city centre, highlighting issues related to discrimination, inclusion and equal rights.
Organisers said the event aimed to promote greater acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in Moldovan society and draw attention to the need for stronger legal safeguards.
Pride marches in Moldova have historically faced opposition from conservative Orthodox Christian groups and politicians who advocate what they describe as "traditional family" values.
Earlier editions of the event were often marked by tensions, counter-protests and heavy police deployments to prevent clashes between participants and opponents.
However, recent Pride marches have proceeded more peacefully, reflecting what activists describe as gradual changes in public attitudes and growing support for human rights protections.
Rights advocates say the annual demonstrations have become increasingly significant as Moldova seeks closer ties with the European Union. Activists argue that advancing human rights, including protections for LGBTQ+ communities, forms an important part of the country's broader democratic and European aspirations.
While challenges remain, organisers described this year's march as another milestone in efforts to promote equality, visibility and inclusion in Moldova.
