Dubai: US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that the interim ceasefire agreement with Iran is “over” but that he would allow negotiations to continue between the two nations.
Trump made the comment on the sidelines of the two-day NATO summit in Turkey's Ankara.
“For me, I think it's over,” Trump responded when asked about the status of the ceasefire. “It's just a waste of time dealing with them”, he added on.
The comments came hours after US struck Iran in what the former described as retaliation for strikes on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest spate of attacks puts the future of the interim ceasefire agreement signed by the two nations on June 17 in limbo. The agreement gave both the nations 60 days to work out a broader, final settlement.
Following the agreement, both the nations held high-level talks as well as indirect talks mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. The latest series of crossfires happen as the next set of high-level talks between US and Iran is expected to be held in Doha in the third week of July after the funeral ceremonies for late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are completed.
