Chester-le-Street: India's fragile batting against Ireland has intensified calls for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's long-awaited debut as the visitors begin a five-match T20I series against England at the Riverside Ground on Wednesday.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has maintained that Sooryavanshi must "go through the process" before breaking into the playing XI. However, he also admitted that the teenage sensation appears ready for international cricket.
Whether India stick to that stance after a 0-2 whitewash in Ireland remains the biggest talking point heading into the series opener.
Sanju Samson's twin failures at the top of the order and Ishan Kishan's scores of 1 and 12 have strengthened the case for Sooryavanshi's inclusion. India could pair the youngster with Abhishek Sharma, whose quickfire 49 in the first T20I was one of the few positives from an otherwise disappointing series.
Dropping either Samson or Kishan, however, would be a significant call, especially given Samson's impressive run in the latter stages of the T20 World Cup and his prolific IPL season with Chennai Super Kings.
Yet India's selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Gautam Gambhir have shown they are willing to make bold decisions. The management handed debuts to Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav in Ireland, while Sooryavanshi was made to wait.
Batting concerns extend beyond one player
Even if Sooryavanshi gets his debut, India know one change alone will not solve their batting issues.
The Irish seamers exposed India's discomfort on lively surfaces, with the batters struggling to adapt once aggressive stroke-making became difficult. Tilak Varma's patient half-century in the second T20I stood out, but his dismissal reflected India's broader inability to balance caution with intent while chasing manageable targets.
England are expected to offer similar conditions, but with a far stronger bowling attack featuring Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Saqib Mahmood and Sonny Baker, supported by the spin duo of Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed.
The Riverside Ground has traditionally favoured bowlers, with an average first-innings T20I score of just 138 across eight matches. Unless India's batters adjust quickly, they risk slipping to a second successive series defeat under new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer.
Bowlers face a tougher challenge
India's bowlers also have areas to address after allowing Ireland to recover in the middle overs despite making early breakthroughs.
Any repeat against an England batting unit featuring Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox and Tom Banton could prove costly.
India will expect a much-improved performance from their spin attack, with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar needing greater control through the middle overs.
