Vancouver: Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday, thanks to goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye.

The Swiss will face the winner of Friday's match between Colombia and Ghana in the Round of 16. The knockout fixture is scheduled to be played in Vancouver next Tuesday.

Switzerland are aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954. Their last knockout-stage victory at the tournament came in 1938.

Although Switzerland reached the Round of 16 at each of the previous three World Cups, they were eliminated at that stage on every occasion.

For Algeria, the defeat ended their first World Cup campaign since 2014, when they reached the Round of 16 before losing to eventual champions Germany.

Algeria made a bright start and controlled the opening 10 minutes before Switzerland struck with their first clear opportunity.

Johan Manzambi surged down the right flank and delivered a low cross for Embolo, who tapped home to score his 26th international goal before celebrating with a knee slide.

Switzerland doubled their advantage less than a minute into the second half when Ndoye unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area that beat Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

The Swiss nearly added a third goal in the 81st minute, but Fabian Rieder failed to convert from close range as the ball rolled across the face of goal.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the match after earlier watching Spain's victory over Austria in Inglewood, California.

Algeria had reached the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams following a 3-3 draw with Austria in their previous match. The result sent both teams through while eliminating Iran. Veteran captain Riyad Mahrez scored twice in that match.

Switzerland entered the knockout stage after defeating Canada 2-1 in their final group match, with goals from Rubén Vargas and Manzambi ending Canada's hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout rounds on home soil.

The Swiss also benefited from a week's break before the match, returning to their training base in San Diego.

Twenty-year-old Manzambi has emerged as one of Switzerland's standout performers at the tournament, contributing two goals and two assists. Having started the World Cup as a substitute, he has earned a place in the starting line-up for the team's last two matches.

The match also carried added significance for Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković, who managed Switzerland between 2014 and 2021. During his tenure, he guided the Swiss to the knockout stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2020.
